How Does Opioid Addiction Treatment Work?
When a person is addicted to opioids, the first step in treatment is detoxification. This initial treatment phase allows the body to cleanse itself of the drug. During detox, the individual will experience withdrawal symptoms like sweating, headache, vomiting, muscle aches, and insomnia. They may also feel anxious and depressed. Detox staff provides FDA-approved medications that help minimize these symptoms so the person can complete detox in about five to seven days.
After detox, outpatient programs can provide great results for people who can attend therapy sessions during the day. While not everyone has the exact same experience during detox and withdrawal from opioids, a general timeline exists. Days two to four find the person experiencing intensified previous symptoms. They may also feel nauseous, vomit, or have diarrhea. Nashville Treatment Solutions offers a detox program done on an outpatient basis. We medically monitor each person during the day and offer any support for physical or psychological withdrawal symptoms. The individual then returns home at night.
Once detox is completed, there are three levels of continuing care:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): 30 hours a week of therapy that helps people continue the sobriety they started in detox.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Several sessions per week to provide a helpful step down from PHP.
- Outpatient Program (OP): The last step in treatment involves attending one-on-one and group therapy sessions a few times a week.
We also offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as part of our opioid addiction treatment. This combines both talk therapy and the use of prescription medications to relieve physical withdrawal symptoms and feelings like anxiety and depression.
