Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Creekside Recovery Network offers a full continuum of customizable care for adults whose lives have been disrupted by addictions and certain mental health concerns. Our programming options include intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs (IOPs). At the IOP level, adults benefit from a dynamic balance between structured clinical services and ample opportunities for independent living.

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a level of addiction treatment that features partial days of treatment a few days each week. IOPs can be ideal options for adults who need step-down support after transitioning out of residential treatment or a partial hospitalization program. An IOP can also be a beneficial experience for someone who is stepping up from traditional outpatient counseling, or who is entering treatment for the first time.

Groups are usually the main method of treatment in intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, but other services and therapies may also be available as needed. IOPs offer considerable flexibility while still allowing adults to retain a structured connection to clinical services and peer support.

What to Expect at Our Intensive Outpatient Program

Here are a few examples of what you can expect when you choose one of the intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs that are part of Creekside Recovery Network:

  1. Safe and supportive environment: The safety of our patients, staff, and visitors is our top priority. Throughout your time in one of our IOPs, you will be in a safe space among people truly care about you. We understand that untreated addiction can have a profound negative impact on your confidence and self-esteem, and we are committed to helping your rediscover your innate talents and inherent value.
  2. Group therapy: Groups are significant parts of treatment at the IOP level. During group sessions, you can gain important information about addiction, treatment, and recovery. These sessions are ideal forums for developing and practicing vital relapse-prevention skills, such as effective communication and conflict resolution. Also, during groups you will have the opportunity to share insights, experiences, and support with others who are also working to gain a solid foothold in early recovery.
  3. Skilled professionals: The dedicated experts who provide care at our IOPs bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their roles. They also share an unwavering commitment to providing personalized care in a welcoming and respectful environment. The members of your treatment team will take the time to get to know you as a unique individual, so they can be certain they are providing the focused care that best meets your unique needs.
  4. Independent living: One of the challenges of recovery is finding healthy ways to fill the hours that you previously dedicated to acquiring and using addictive substances. While you are in one of our intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, you may have the time to seek employment, work, attend classes, and/or volunteer. While you are engaging in these activities, you will also be practicing the relapse prevention skills you learned in treatment. When the IOP is back in session, you can process your experiences, discuss your successes and setbacks, and receive feedback from other participants as well as the professionals who lead the sessions.

IOP vs. PHP

Outpatient treatment for substance use disorders can occur at multiple levels. Two of the most common and effective options are Intensive outpatient programs and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs).

Key similarities between IOP vs. PHP include the following:

  1. Neither level of care includes a residential component.
  2. Both levels of care accept adults who have addictions as well as those who also have co-occurring mental health concerns.
  3. Patients can transition into an IOP or a PHP for step-down support after completing a higher level of care.
  4. Patients can enter treatment directly at either the IOP or PHP levels.

The following are examples of important differences between IOP vs PHP:

  1. A treatment day in a PHP is typically longer than an IOP. PHPs usually involve full days of treatment (which can range from five to eight hours). An average treatment day in an IOP usually lasts about three hours.
  2. PHPs provide more treatment per week. At the PHP level, you can expect to attend treatment sessions at least five days each week. In an IOP, a week may include only two or three days of care.
  3. PHPs have the time to offer a greater number of therapies that IOPs do.
  4. IOPs offer greater opportunities for participants to work, take classes, and engage in other aspects of a healthy independent lifestyle.

Benefits of Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Programs

The specific list of benefits that a person receives from one of our IOPs will depend on the nature of the challenges they have been facing, as well as their goals for treatment. In general, though, everyone who takes part in an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program at a Creekside Recovery Network facility can expect to benefit from the following features:

  1. Personalized care: Although group therapy is a main form of care in our intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, we still place a premium on personalized service. We will assess the full scope of your needs, help you develop short- and long-term treatment goals, then offer the focused care that will help you achieve your objectives and progress in your recovery.
  2. Step-down support: Residential care and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) can be vital parts of a person’s path to recovery. But many people need additional assistance to help them strengthen their skills and prepare for a successful transition out of treatment. Our IOPs offer an ideal balance of structured clinical care and ample opportunities for independent living, which makes them valuable sources of step-down support.
  3. Longer time in treatment: Every day that you’re in treatment is an opportunity to gain a stronger foothold in recovery. Considerable research indicates that extended time in treatment can lead to more successful outcomes. While you are in treatment at the IOP level, you will also have many opportunities to test and hone your relapse-prevention skills in real-world situations, while still benefitting from professional guidance and peer support.
  4. Flexibility: One of the benefits of residential care is that you can temporarily step away from the stresses and distractions of everyday life. But to achieve successful recovery, you need to be able to face the many challenges that life throws your way without resorting to substance abuse. The flexibility of our IOP schedules means that you will have both the time and the encouragement to take part in an array of non-treatment activities. This will help you grow in your recovery. It can also help you identify areas of concern that you can address during future IOP sessions.
